AGI CEO pushes solar adoption to cut energy costs

The Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Seth Twum-Akwaboah, has called for increased investment in solar energy to help businesses reduce high energy costs and remain competitive.
According to him, the rising cost of energy continues to be one of the biggest concerns for businesses, making alternative energy sources such as solar increasingly important for industries.
“One of the key elements in cost is energy, and the energy bit is so critical because if you’re able to reduce the cost of energy, you can become more competitive,” he said.

Twum-Akwaboah made the remarks during the launch of the BisaConnect Platform in Accra on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.
He explained that the platform would help businesses interested in solar energy connect with trusted service providers and financial institutions.
“What we have done is to develop this platform where interest from members, interest from businesses can be registered and say, I want to do solar, but whom do I contact?” he said.
He also said many businesses were interested in solar energy but faced challenges in finding the right experts to handle their projects.
“There are so many people who say we can provide solar consultancy services, we can do installations, but the fact is that it’s a very technical one,” he said.
Twum-Akwaboah said the platform would also support companies in conducting feasibility studies before investing in solar projects.
“I know they contribute more than 50% of the cost of doing the feasibility study. So, that for me is a major game changer for companies that want to go into solar,” he said, referring to support from Swisscontact.
He stressed that Ghana needed to increase its use of renewable energy, particularly as businesses continue to search for ways to reduce their operating costs.
“We are talking sustainability, we are talking about the future. It’s actually a way to go. And therefore, we are concerned that it’s too low,” he said.
