Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has opened up about the downside of having an extremely loyal fanbase, revealing that some international stars, including Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby, once reached out to him after some fans bombarded them over some collaboration issues.
Speaking on the +44 Podcast, the singer revealed that the ill behaviour of some of his fans online caught the attention of these international artistes.
“Even Nicki called me. Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby were like, ‘Yo, who are these guys…?’ Because the fans were DMing them asking, ‘Why did you do a song with Davido?’ He recounted.

Davido said he also urged his supporters not to drag his colleague Nigerian artistes into unnecessary comparisons, noting that he had recently spent time with Wizkid.
“So before the album came out I was like, ‘Look, I was even with Wizkid earlier this week, so you don’t have to tweet anybody or say this one is passing that one. If you like me, just say you like me,” he said
Davido said even recently, he had to warn his fans ahead of the release of his latest album not to attack other artistes.
“My fans, I can’t get to all of them, but there’s one person I can call like, ‘Yo, talk to them, tell them to calm down,’” he said.
According to Davido, he contacted one of his fan leaders before releasing his album and pleaded with them to tone down the online attacks.
“So before the album came out, I called one of them. I was like, ‘Look, last time I dropped my album, you guys were just bashing everybody, so when it was my turn to come out, there were just unnecessary things that happened,” he said
Davido admitted that while fan wars often play out on social media, they can sometimes have real-life consequences.
“I won’t lie to you; I would say it affects sometimes,” he said.
“I called someone in 30BG to tell others to calm down and not banter anyone when my album was dropping because the last time they went to Nicki Minaj & Lil Baby’s DMs & started dragging them. Nicki called me, and that was why we couldn’t shoot the music video for Holy Ground." -… pic.twitter.com/AOgWshWjiT
