EKA family union steps up community development initiatives

The Efor, Kpogo and Agbavitor Family Union (EKA Family Union) of Avenorpeme in the Volta Region has stepped up efforts to improve the welfare of its members and contribute to development in the area through interventions in healthcare, education and community infrastructure. Among the Union’s major initiatives are support to a local health facility with medical supplies and other essential items, the acquisition of two acres of land for a new cemetery, and measures to improve educational opportunities for children in the community. The initiatives were highlighted at the fourth Annual General Meeting of the EKA Family Union held at Gokukope, a suburb of Amasaman in the Ga West Municipality on September 12, 2026. The meeting brought together members of the family to review the Union’s activities, assess progress made on development initiatives and deliberate on plans to strengthen the family and contribute to the development of Avenorpeme. Speaking at the meeting, Rev Emmanuel Dordzie, Chairman of the EKA Family Union, said the Union had made considerable progress in addressing some of the challenges confronting the family and the wider community. He said the Union, with support from family members and friends, had responded to requests from the health facility at Avenorpeme by providing medical supplies and other essential items. “Last year, we were able to organise some of the items the facility needed. We relied on our friends and family members who donated medical supplies and other essential items,” he said. Rev Dordzie said the Union also provided equipment and other items to improve the comfort of patients and healthcare workers at the facility. He said the intervention had been well received by the facility, adding that the support had contributed to improving healthcare delivery in the area. According to him, the facility had indicated that the support received could strengthen its case for an upgrade to polyclinic status. The Chairman said the Union had also identified education as an important area requiring sustained attention and was taking steps to support education in the area. He said the Union recognised that improving access to quality education was critical to the future development of the community and the younger generation. He explained that the education interventions formed part of the Union’s broader commitment to investing in the welfare and future of members of the family and residents of the area. Rev Dordzie said another major achievement was the acquisition of two acres of land for a new cemetery, following concerns that the family’s existing cemetery at Avenopema was almost full. He said the new land had been duly registered and the necessary permit obtained, with two burials already conducted there. “We want to give the new cemetery a standard outlook by putting up the necessary structures and ensuring that it is properly organised,” he said. Rev Dordzie said the Union intended to develop the cemetery into a well-planned and properly maintained facility with appropriate structures and a dignified environment. He said the cemetery project was one of several initiatives being pursued by the family, adding that other development projects were being considered. He, however, stressed that the success of the Union’s programmes depended on the collective commitment, ideas and resources of family members. He said the annual general meeting provided an opportunity for members to celebrate the Union’s achievements, identify challenges, share ideas and chart a common path for the future. “If we want to have a strong family tomorrow, it must be built today. Your ideas matter and your contributions are important,” he said. Rev Dordzie therefore urged members to participate actively in the affairs of the Union and contribute their ideas, expertise and resources towards building a strong, united and credible family organisation. He said the Union remained committed to using its collective strength to support education, healthcare and other development initiatives that would improve the lives of people in the area.
