Drama as suspected phone thief swallows five SIM cards during arrest

A 27-year-old man allegedly swallowed five SIM cards in an attempt to conceal evidence after he was intercepted by police on the Kasoa-Bawjiase Highway.
The Central East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Nchor, disclosed that the suspect, identified as Awudu Baba, was apprehended at a police checkpoint around midnight on September 19, 2026.
According to the police, Awudu was carrying five mobile phones of various brands when officers stopped him.
The devices included an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung A12.
Police said the suspect had removed the SIM cards from the phones before his arrest. Upon realising that he was about to be taken into custody, he allegedly swallowed all five SIM cards in an apparent attempt to prevent investigators from obtaining information that could assist with the case.

Investigations subsequently established that the phones were allegedly stolen from the Awutu Bawjiase area in the Central Region.
The Central East Regional Police Command is therefore appealing to persons who have recently lost their mobile phones to come forward and report their cases.
Victims are also being encouraged to visit the Command to identify and retrieve their property where applicable.
