Why Nii Lante Vanderpuye is calling for a ‘reset’ within the NDC

Former National Coordinator of the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP), Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has called for a “reset” within the National Democratic Congress (NDC), stressing the need for a change in the mindset and attitude of party members. Speaking in a recent interview on Woezor TV, he explained that the proposed reset is not about changing the party itself but reorienting its members on their responsibilities and rights as members of the NDC. “Let me say this, the NDC as a party needs a resetting. Not that we want to change the party, but we must have a reset of mind, a reset of heart, a reset of attitude towards the party,” he said. Vanderpuye said the party must also educate its members on the importance of formal membership, including paying dues and maintaining good standing. He further noted that the NDC needed to find effective ways of encouraging more people to join the party and willingly pay their dues to help make the organisation financially sustainable. “How do we make people who hitherto do not understand why they should pay dues in a political party understand how to pay dues willingly? How do we get more people into the party to pay dues, to make the party sustainable?” he asked. Vanderpuye, who has a background in public relations and journalism, said his experience could help develop messages capable of connecting with party members and encouraging them to take an active interest in the affairs of the NDC. He argued that the party must move beyond simply asking members to fulfil their obligations and instead engage them in a manner that makes them feel they have a stake in the organisation. “You have to go to them with a convincing message. The party needs to go to the party people to make the party people a part of your decision making,” he said. Vanderpuye believes involving more members in decision-making would give them astronger sense of ownership of the party. “If the people take ownership of the party, if they feel that NDC, you understand, once you get them to understand those things, to know that their decisions matter, their voices matter, their opinions matter, then they take ownership of the party,” he added.
