Kim Lars, Aliou Cissé emerge as potential Black Stars coaches

Angola coach Aliou Cissé and Black Queens coach Kim Lars Björkegren have emerged among the favourite coaches being considered for the vacant Black Stars job.
Following the resignation of head coach Carlos Queiroz after the Black Stars’ back-to-back defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, the search for a new manager is underway.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has formed a five-member committee, headed by Fred Pappoe, to recommend a coach by October 9, 2026.
Appiah, Offei, Kingston: Potential local coaches for Black Stars job
Here is a look at the managerial careers of the two coaches, who have guided their respective national teams in various international competitions.
Kim Lars led the Black Queens to win their first bronze medal at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) since 2016 in 2024 and could potentially guide the team to qualify for the upcoming Women’s World Cup.
Having previously been part of the Black Stars’ technical team, his experience could put him among the leading candidates for the vacant position.
Meanwhile, Aliou Cissé, who guided his home country Senegal to their first AFCON title in 2022, is also in the conversation as a potential target.
Cissé currently coaches Angola, who are faring well in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers, although there has been no official interest from his side yet.
Both coaches remain in the mix, with a final decision expected to be made by the committee soon.
