Money is not wealth, credibility is – Janet Nabla warns Ghanaian politicians

Janet Asana Nabla (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has urged Ghanaian politicians to prioritise credibility and accountability over the accumulation of personal wealth. Nabla said public office should be about making a difference in people’s lives rather than using taxpayers’ money to build personal fortunes. Speaking during a panel discussion on Joy Prime, she argued that politicians should understand that their reputation and ability to account for their actions are more valuable than the money they accumulate while in office. She made the comments while discussing the controversy surrounding Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa. According to Nabla, the minister’s handling of questions about the evacuation expenditure reflects a wider problem with accountability in Ghanaian politics. She said politicians should be able to explain how they acquire their wealth and account for public funds entrusted to them. “Money is not wealth. What is wealth is your credibility. What is wealth is your transparency, accountability. These are big, big wealth that when you have it, it helps your legacy,” she said. Nabla added that credibility was what would make people trust a public official long after leaving office. “Those are the wealth that people should be looking for. Money is the lowest of when we are counting of wealth,” she stated. She also criticised politicians who, in her view, entered public office to enrich themselves at the expense of ordinary Ghanaians. Referring to the struggles of people who earn a living through petty trading and other difficult jobs, she said politicians should not use public resources to amass personal wealth. “Look at these people selling water, doing kayaye, sitting in the sun. And you want to use it to come and build something for yourself. You want to amass wealth from them for yourself. You will not succeed,” she said. Nabla maintained that politicians must remember that public funds come from the hard work of ordinary citizens and should be treated with responsibility.Source: mynewsgh.com
