The notion of Afrocentrism is perhaps and have been marginalized by poverty. Africans and their leaders have been concerned about tackling issues of poverty including corruption, senseless wars engendered by ethnic differences that one does not have space to think about this awareness that you talk about in this piece - Afrocentrism.
Good olden days were ripe for this venture, and indeed, Nkrumah pushed that vision for long.
I will solemnly posit that the political dispensation of African states that followed the era of Nkrumah, Nyerere, Tolbert and co, did not augur well for the development and advancement of Afrocentrism. The notion fizzled away and since been replaced by some form of creeping inward looking self-satisfaction ego of our leaders and people. Is was this the beginning of the disintegration of Afrocentrism that was well positioned by Nkrumah and co to advance this African vision?
To even talk about the notion in America is more moot. African Americans are even at a cross road regarding that...should they go to Cape coast or Elmina? By that I mean they are actually torn in between their heritage of africanness and being born Americans.
That's why some of them do not even think about their African roots, and of course, they can not be blamed for that.
So, at best, the notion of Afrocentrism will possibly have to be relived and fought for. It will take a family to instill that in a family, then a community, then a population.

I think the notion of afrocentrism must be embraced by the universities in a very rigorous manner to train new breed of leaders in all endeavors of national life in Africa. This is the only way victory can be ours in term of wellbeing of our people. Definitely, I see it as not a political thing but an intellectual project. Politician have failed us over years so I think the intellectuals should help here. They should not make Asante a single voice in the wilderness and later turn to criticize politicians in their books and public speeches. Dr. Diop an eminent African scholar from Senegal started this work among others. I am glade about Asante's effort in this endeavor.

I agree with Kosoko that our state universities need a chair devoted to Afrocentrism,Nkrumaism and Pan Africanism. It is only when this ideals are introduced at our higher institution of learning, will our tomorrow intellectuals be prepared for the struggle ahead.
