Whatever we do we should not let haste to catch up to others trump adequate planning, foresight or wisdom. What is it about the system in Tanzania or any other nation that is a fit for needs in Ghana? Just like our electricity problems, there must be a starting point and an expected end and result that must be our goal not blind ambition. If we do not have a national telecommunications infrastructure that has room for growth and covers all of Ghana then we must forget it. The appropriate question should be how do we achieve a dependable and robust database system with access to all of government institutions. It is only when data can be accessed on demand that Ghana can move forward into the world of matured nations; copying blindly will just not do.

Brother Sodzi,
This problem is not about to go away anytime soon! I have been through it with exactly three kids. There are too many middle men making too much money for themselves and the employees at the Birth and Death Registration. I shudder to think what it'll take to get my father's death certificate now. Employees at Birth and Death Registry (BAD) forget that they're on a monthly salaries and depend largely on bribes from middle men. They don't want to be seen as taking bribes or corrupt, which they're, so they use the middlemen to keep their pockets lined at the expense of those going through the regular channels. When I first filed for a birth cert for my kids, the story was they were out of paper to print, however the paper was not made by a Ghanaian company but rather a Germany company that will take a while to make and ship the papers. A common colored paper will need months to be available for a whole ministry to successfully carry out their duties!! I asked why the paper was not ordered as they were running low, and I was told they ordered the papers months ago and have still not received them. What agreement did the BAD ministry sign with this German company? Have they not breach the agreement? Or is the case of taking bribe and letting them do what they want?
When the paper finally came in last year Christmas, the employees were hiding hundreds of papers in their drawers to print birth and dead certs at higher prices than the published prices, I saw this with my own eyes with people who were not working in the printing rooms keeping hundreds of these papers.
The passport office is worse, with middlemen, or as they call themselves contractors, making the process one of the highest paying business in Ghana. I paid over 500 cedis per passport and was promised these passports within five days, seven months later I was still fighting with the contractor and threatening him with an arrest by the Police officers just to get my passports. I finally got a refund of just 350 cedis per passport(because he used some of the money to bribe the Immigration officers) and had to go through the Immigration office to get them
I wished all these people and the contractors could be exposed just like the judges were and maybe this will help straightened things out a little bit
