Bozoma Saint John shares story behind colourful Ghanaian wedding ring
Former Netflix executive Bozoma Saint John has revealed that her newly married husband, Keely Watson, designed a custom wedding ring inspired by the colours of her kente cloth for their Ghanaian traditional marriage, offering a glimpse into some of the customs that accompanied their ceremony.
Speaking in an interview on ExtraTV, Keely explained that unlike the engagement ring, Bozoma wanted a separate band for their traditional wedding that reflected the vibrant colours of the kente she wore.
“She wanted something that was vastly different than what she would be getting for the US wedding. She asked for something that would match her kente cloth and the colours in the kente cloth were the red, the green, the blue, the yellow and the orange,” she said.
To achieve that, he said the ring was crafted with red rubies, orange sapphires, yellow diamonds, blue sapphires and emeralds.
The conversation then turned to the traditional marriage itself, with Bozoma explaining that Ghanaian weddings place more emphasis on the coming together of two families than on the couple.
“The ceremony is unlike a Western wedding where you’re used to seeing a white dress and an aisle that you walk down and a priest or pastor who unites you in vows. For Ghanaians and a lot of West Africans, it’s more about two families coming together. The marriage ceremony is not centred on the bride and groom; it’s centred on the families coming to agreement,” she added.
She added that one of her favourite aspects of the tradition is the symbolic role of the bride.
“The part that, of course, I love is that the bride is the prize at the end of the day.”
As part of the customary rites, Keely said he was presented with a dowry list from Bozoma’s family that included drinks, liquor, expensive kente cloth, assorted clothing, cash gifts for relatives and jewellery.
“I had this entire list that her family generated for me. We had all types of drinks, liquors, very expensive kente cloths, an assortment of clothes and cash envelopes for everybody,” he said
Bozoma interrupted to remind him not to leave out one important item, “don’t forget my jewellery.”
Keely laughed and agreed, saying, “Last but not least, of course, jewellery.”
