'We need a coach who can add something to what players have' - Mohammed Polo

Former Black Stars player and 1978 Africa Cup of Nations winner, Mohammed Polo, has called on Ghana to appoint a coach capable of adding value to the current crop of players.

The Black Stars have been without a head coach since Carlos Queiroz and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) mutually parted ways on October 1, 2026.

The GFA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, has since established a five-member search committee chaired by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe to find a replacement for the Portuguese coach.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Mohammed Polo said the next Black Stars coach must be capable of improving the players rather than simply relying on their existing abilities.

“We need coaches who can add value, who can add something to what the players have. Now, the coaches who come there, they don’t add anything. So, it is what the players know is what they are playing,”he said.

Polo also believes Ghana’s search for a new coach should go beyond the senior national team and focus on developing talent from the grassroots.

According to the former Hearts of Oak star, Ghana has talented players but needs quality coaching to help them develop and reach the required level.

“So, not until we go to the grassroots and find a coach, we need a coach. Today, if we don’t have a good coach, you know, that will develop because the talents are there. But they are limited,”he added.

He added that young players need the right technical guidance to improve their game and progress to the highest level.

“They need some additional value to grow and progress and improve to the level that we’re looking for,” he added.
