Eight JSS in Mpohor-Wassa East District scored zero per cent in BECE.

Daboase (W/R), Oct.05, GNA - Mr. Edward Tawiah Amprofi, Mpohor Wassa East District Chief Executive on Wednesday said eight Junior Secondary Schools in the district scored zero per cent in the 2004-2005 Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). He said out of a total of 1,473 candidates who sat for the examination in the district, only 595 passed representing 40.4 per cent while 878 failed to score aggregate 30.

Mr. Amprofi announced this at the second ordinary meeting of the third session of the assembly at Daboase.

He said the schools which scored zero per cent were, Enyinabrem, Atwebesa, Sekyere, Obuase, Krofofrom, Dwenase, Adansi and the Kwabaa-Adeakyewodamnu-Kwameyaw (KAK) JSS.

Mr. Amprofi said the poor performance of the students showed that the assembly must find alternative means of improving on the performance. He said the Accra Town District Council (D/C) primary school had been selected as part of the pilot schools to implement the School Feeding Programme (SFP).

The DCE said about 190 school children were expected to participate in the programme, that would cost 13.5 million cedis for the first 30 days. Mr. Amprofi said each child would be fed on 2,500 cedis worth of supplementary balanced diet, to minimise malnutrition among children and enhance their learning capabilities.

He said to facilitate the programme a dinning hall estimated at 124 million cedis was currently under construction. Mr. Amprofi said cooking utensils, cups, gas cookers, liquid soaps and other items that would be used for the implementation of the SFP had arrived in the district.

The DCE told the assembly that although the Government had abolished the payment of fees and other levies, many parents in the district were finding it difficult to provide school uniforms, exercise books and other educational materials for their wards. He said to facilitate the promotion of education in the district, the assembly would continue to provide brilliant but needy pupils with school uniforms, exercise books and other educational materials.
