African countries that have received vaccines so far [LIST]

A year ago when the coronavirus was beginning to spread across the continent, the main focus of most governments was how to get supplies to help with testing Personal Protective Equipment, PPE, for frontline health workers.

Thanks to bilateral and multilateral partners plus local initiatives, Africa scaled the hurdle of testing even though the issue of lack of PPEs has triggered strikes – by health workers - and criticism – from civil society over government’s aloofness in protecting the public health system’s human resource.

A year on, vaccines are the big thing as governments across the continent look to inoculate the citizenry – a number of them targeting herd immunity within a reasonable time frame.

Like the initial supplies, countries have to depend on multiple channels to get vaccines. The main source for most African countries is the COVAX facility – an equitable vaccine distribution platform and the African Union’s Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team, AVATT.

Aside these two, bilateral deals either with governments or manufacturers is also an avenue some countries are seeking to boost their supplies. GhanaWeb looks at the number of countries to have received doses and from where, as of today, March 2, 2021.
