Cameroon confirms its first case of coronavirus

Cameroon has reported its first case of coronavirus with the health ministry saying on Friday that the case involves a 58-year-old French citizen who arrived in the capital Yaounde on Feb. 24.

The ministry said the man was quarantined in the city’s Central Hospital.

“All measures have been taken by the government to contain potential risks of the virus spreading,” it said in a statement.

Cameroon becomes the fourth sub-saharan African nation after South Africa, Nigeria and Senegal to report of the coronavirus.

So far Africa has reported of over 30 cases with countries including, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and South Africa all recording cases.

More than 100,000 cases and over 3,000 deaths have been recorded in some 60 countries worldwide.

The coronavirus outbreak began in the central Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year.

Victims of coronavirus often suffer from respiratory illness. The virus is a global public health emergency, according to the World Health Organisation.

The WHO has advised that people stay at home if they begin to feel unwell, even with mild symptoms such as headache and a slight runny nose, until they recover.
