Nigeria's Kano state government has allowed Friday and Eid al-Fitr prayers across the north-western state after a request by some religious leaders.

The Kano governor however said traditional Eid celebrations in the state will not be allowed.

Imams have been directed to ensure that all worshippers wear masks, socially distance themselves, and wash their hands.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media Salihu Yakasai said the governor made the decision after "lengthy consultations".

"The state government has also inaugurated a committee that will oversee the distribution of hand sanitisers, sanitation equipment, as well as face masks, among others to imams," he wrote in a statement.

Kano state has been on an extended lockdown and is among the states with the highest number of coronavirus cases in Nigeria.
