End SARS Activist, Aisha Yesufu
When the End SARS protests against police brutality started in Nigeria, young Nigerians showed the world what they are capable of.
In the early stages of the protest, a number of young Nigerians became opinion leaders in the struggle.
Though the End SARS protests never had a clear leader as the Nigerian youth banded together on this cause, certain people became influential figures.
One of such people is Aisha Yesufu.
Her iconic image went viral, with Aisha now been recognized as one of the BBC 100 Women of 2020.
Aisha Yesufu is an activist demanding good governance in her country.
She is a co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign, launched in response to the 2014 abduction of more than 200 girls from a secondary school in Chibok, Nigeria, by the militant group Boko Haram.
“My advice to women is to fully and unapologetically take their place in the world,” Ayesha told the BBC.
“Women should stop asking for a place at the table, they should create their own table,” she added.
The BBC 100 Women for 2020 focused on women who led change.
The group of women were chosen from those who made the news headlines or influenced important stories over the past 12 months, as well as those who have inspiring stories to tell, achieved something significant or influenced their societies in ways that wouldn’t necessarily make the news.
American actress Jane Fonda is also among the list of BBC 100 Women 2020.
