Kenya's agriculture minister says an invasion of locusts is wreaking havoc on food production and grazing land, describing it as an unprecedented threat.

Mwangi Kiunjuri said the swarms had now reached central Kenya after crossing over the border from Somalia, where they have destroyed vast quantities of crops.

He said aircraft and pesticides were being made available to spray affected areas.

A plea he made for Kenyans to share photographs on social media of any locusts they encounter has been mocked by some.

The UN's food agency says the locust invasion in the Horn and east of Africa is the worst in 70 years.
