Kenya's Great Rift Valley lakes continue to flood

Kenya's Great Rift Valley has witnessed rising water levels for months now following heavy rains and lakes have flooded.

The main gate to Lake Nakuru national park has been totally submerged by rising water levels. There are fears that Lake Baringo and Lake Bogoria, one fresh and the other saline, will contaminate each other.

The flooding has forced thousands of people to flee their homes and has submerged huge areas of farmland. Illegal deforestation is said to have left most areas vulnerable to flood waters.

The sizes of lakes have almost doubled and the authorities have been forced to create alternative routes to the parks surrounding the lakes.

Offices and some tourist sites have been submerged in Lake Nakuru national park.
