Moris Eyit in the dock at City Hall Magistrates Court in Kampala on Tuesday
The City Hall Magistrates Court in Kampala has sentenced a 27-year-old security guard to community service after he pleaded guilty to tearing down presidential campaign posters belonging to the NRM presidential candidate, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Moris Eyit, a resident of Bukoto in Nakawa Division, appeared before trial Magistrate Edgar Karakire and admitted to defacement of posters contrary to Section 80 of the Presidential Elections Act.
According to the charge sheet, Eyit and others, still at large, removed and tore down Museveni's campaign posters on November 25, 2025, in Kyanja, Kampala District. He was arrested shortly after the incident.
When the charge was read to him, Eyit pleaded guilty and asked the court for forgiveness. "I am sorry for what I did. I will not repeat it," he said, adding that he was ready to comply with any sentence the court deemed fit.
The State Prosecutor told the court that Eyit was a first-time offender who had admitted to the offence without wasting court time.
The prosecution left the question of sentencing to the court, but noted that the punishment should also serve as a deterrent to others.
In his ruling, Magistrate Karakire sentenced Eyit to community service and warned that failure to comply would result in two weeks imprisonment at Luzira. He ordered that the sentence take effect immediately.
Eyit, who stood quietly in the dock, accepted the ruling and confirmed to the court that he would commence the community service as directed.
The conviction comes just weeks ahead of the January 15, 2026, presidential elections.
