Islamist militants have attacked a strategic garrison town in Nigeria’s north-eastern Borno state.

Residents say that at least six people have been killed, including soldiers and civilians.

Some reports put the number of dead higher.

The jihadists reportedly stormed the town of Monguno around noon local time on Saturday, firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades, and overpowering government troops.

An offshoot of Boko Haram, known as Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap), said it was behind the attack.

More than 100,000 of the town’s residents are people who have been displaced from their homes by the 10-year conflict in the region.
