Nigerian musician Seun Kuti has been arrested for slapping a policeman.
The spokesperson of the Lagos police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, tweeted that Kuti had handed himself in on Monday, along with a photo of the musician in handcuffs.
The musician’s detention was ordered on Saturday, May 13 by Police Chief Usman Alkali Baba.
The youngest son of music legend, Fela Kuti said that he did it to protect his family from being killed.
On Saturday, May 13, 2023, Seun Kuti was captured in a video assaulting an officer in uniform.
The video saw the two men in the middle of a busy Lagos road.
It is unclear what caused the confrontation but Kuti pushed the officer before striking him twice in the face.
Kuti, before his arrest, tweeted that the policeman wanted to kill his family but did not give further details, adding that he will turn himself in on Monday, May 15, 2023.
Nigerians called for the arrest and prosecution of Seun Kuti as the video hit the internet.
Slapping a police officer is a serious offence in Nigeria which could lead to a three-year jail term if found guilty.
