Governor of Nigeria's Benue State, Samuel Ortom, has commended the president for his order mandating security agents to shoot and kill persons illegally in the possession of AK-47 rifles in the bush.

According to him, the order would reduce criminal attacks not just in his state but across the country.

“I wish to commend Mr President for his order against those bearing AK-47 rifles. This I am sure will reduce the high rate of criminality, banditry and militia herdsmen attacks on our farming communities,” he stated.

He added that Buhari had taken the right decision in line with arresting the fast rising spate of insecurity that is sweeping across the country - Africa's most populous.

The governor gave the commendation while receiving officials of the State Universal Basic Education in state capital, Makurdi; the local Punch Newspaper reported.

The president's spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in mid-week told the BBC Hausa Service that the president had ordered decisive action to be taken against persons illegally holding AK-47 rifles in the bush.

Nigeria's Zamfara State this week announced the rescue of close to 280 school girls who had been abducted by gunmen from a boarding school in the northwestern Zamfara State.

Following the rescue, President Buhari imposed a no-fly-zone over the state as a security measure and also announced a ban on mining activities across the state.
