South Africa is weighing its legal options regarding the potential attendance of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the upcoming Brics summit in August.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Putin in connection with the conflict in Ukraine, putting South Africa in a dilemma as the host of the summit.
Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor stated that the government is currently examining the legal possibilities and will defer to President Cyril Ramaphosa for further comment once a decision has been reached.
There are suggestions that South Africa may ask China or Mozambique to host the summit instead. However, a spokesperson for Pandor affirmed that, as of now, the summit is scheduled to take place in Gauteng, South Africa.
The Brics group consists of Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa.
