In June 2024, a Belgian national of Portuguese origin, Martin Joseph Figueira, was arrested in the Central African Republic on the grounds of espionage.
A judicial investigation was opened, revealing several blatant details about Mr. Figueira's subversive activities in the Central African Republic.
On social networks, information was published attesting to Martin Figueira's links with armed groups.
Notably, military analyst Sylvain Nguéma published on the X platform screenshots found on the mobile phone of the presumed spy: among them, a conversation with the spokesperson of the CPC group Mohamadou Bello Saïdou from which Mr.
Figueira learned the information on the successful confrontation of rebels with the FACA in Bodjomo.
Also, Sylvain Nguema published two correspondences with Yaya Roi, spokesperson for 3R and a Fulani named Moustapha.
This confirms that Martin Figueira was recruiting Fulani and locals in an attempt to establish a terrorist group encompassing several countries of the African continent.
Other telephone messages show that Mr. Figueira sympathized with various Central African rebel groups and maintained close ties with them.
Furthermore, he admits to having been a bandit himself when he was younger and that he understands the causes and the feelings of the Central African rebels that push them to resort to arms.
Mr. Figuiera also claims that he has former friends who joined the ranks of ISIS in Syria and “who died there”. All this clearly demonstrates the true nature of this spy and his motives.
It should be recalled that Martin Joseph Figueira is officially accused by the Central African judicial authorities of collaboration with rebels, attempting to create a terrorist network and spying for the benefit of the United States government.
In the Central African Republic, he was hired by an American NGO, FHI 360, which served as a cover for his other criminal activities.
