Tanzanian professional boxer Hassan Mgaya passed away on December 30, 2024, shortly after being referred to Muhimbili National Hospital from Mwananyamala Hospital.
The boxer’s death followed an incident on Saturday, December 27, 2024, when he was knocked out by Paul Elias in the lightweight bout held at the Dunia Ndogo Hall in Tandale, Dar es Salaam.
Tanzania Professional Boxing Regulatory Commission (TPBRC) Acting Secretary General Nsajigwa Mwangamilo said the burial ceremony would take place on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, in Vingunguti, Dar es Salaam.
“We have information on the matter, and we extend our deepest condolences to the family and boxing stakeholders in the country,” said Nsajigwa.
He further noted that the bout was organized by a registered promoter who adhered to all regulations.
For his part, Treasurer of the Boxers’ Association, Cosmas Cheka, explained that the late Mgaya succumbed to his injuries while being transferred to Muhimbili after his condition worsened on December 28, 2024.
He added that earlier, Mgaya had been taken to Palestina Hospital in Sinza before being transferred to Mwananyamala Hospital.
It is alleged that the cause of his critical condition, which led to his death, was the numerous head punches he sustained during the fifth round of his match against opponent Paul Elias.
The boxer collapsed and bit his tongue during the incident, causing it to sink into his throat.
After the incident, first aid was administered, and he initially appeared to recover. However, his condition deteriorated this morning, and he was rushed to the hospital.
The late Mgaya becomes the second boxer in the country to pass away recently following a match.
