Tanzania and Romania to cement bilateral ties

Tanzania and Romania are set to strengthen their bilateral ties through cooperation in various areas, including agriculture, health, education, disaster management, mining, and diplomacy.

This was announced by the leaders of the two countries during a press briefing on Friday, November 17, following the arrival of Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Tanzania for his four-day state visit.

The two countries signed two Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs). The first MoU focuses on promoting cooperation in the areas of disaster management and international humanitarian assistance. The second MoU aims to promote economic, technological, and scientific cooperation in the fields of agriculture and environment.

Speaking at the State House, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan said that the visit by President Iohannis is significant for the bilateral relations between the two countries, being the first involving a high-ranking leader from Romania.

“It’s historical. Our meeting involved issues that are important to both of us, and we have agreed to jointly take action towards cooperating in strategic areas, “she said.

“We talked about the opportunities in health and pharmaceutical manufacturing, agriculture processing, and the potential to share experience in the sectors of agriculture, mining, and disaster management,” she said.

President Hassan also highlighted the potential for increased cooperation in the areas of health, education, trade, and investment.

She said that Tanzania has asked for Romania's support for its agenda on Green Energy and Clean Cooking during the upcoming COP28 climate change conference in Dubai.

In his remarks, President Iohannis said that Tanzania is one of the strategic countries as Romania seeks to expand its international relations with the African continent.

He invited President Hassan to Romania to further discuss ways to strengthen the two countries' ties.
