'That's all folks! We did it together' - Italian icon Buffon retires from football

Italian goalkeeping legend, Gianluigi Buffon has retired from the sport.

He announced the decision via a social media post (August 2, 2023), signifying an end to the career of one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the sport.

"That's all folks! You gave me everything. I gave you everything. We did it together," he posted in English on social media.

Buffon, 45, ends his club career at Parma, where he started his career in the game.

At the national team level, he has a record 176 caps and rose through the ranks to become a skipper.

With respect to Serie A matches played, he holds yet another record of 657 games, stretching back to 1995.

Buffon won a total of 27 major trophies.

Most of which were during his 19 seasons at Juventus, he won 10 Serie A titles, five Italian Cups, while he also won the UEFA Cup in 1999 for Parma.

He also won Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019 before returning to Juve, but he will be most fondly remembered for Italy's victory at the 2006 World Cup.
