A probe is underway into the incident
Two women have died in Nakapiripirit District following a violent dispute that erupted after a fight between their children, police confirmed on Tuesday.
The deceased have been identified as Lucia Putan and Oliver Anyamun, both residents of Nachele Village, Loregae Parish, Loregae Sub-County.
Inspector of Police Mike Longole, public relations officer for Mount Moroto’s Anti-Stick Theft Unit (ASTU), told reporters the incident escalated rapidly from a domestic disagreement.
“The incident, which began as a domestic dispute between two mothers following a fight between their children, escalated into a violent confrontation,” Longole said.
According to preliminary police reports, Ms Putan allegedly took her own life by hanging herself in the home of the second victim, Oliver Anyamun.
Following the discovery of Putan’s body, Anyamun was reportedly strangled to death by Putan’s children in an act of revenge.
“We have launched a comprehensive investigation into the matter, with detectives visiting the crime scene and collecting evidence,” Longole said.
One suspect has already been arrested in connection with the deaths, he added.
Authorities are calling for calm in the village while urging residents to support police efforts to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“The police are working to ensure that justice is served and that the community can heal from this tragic event,” Longole said.
Locals expressed shock over the scale of the violence, which has left the small village grappling with grief and fear.
The police investigation is ongoing, with officers committed to piecing together the sequence of events that led to the deaths.
Authorities have appealed for anyone with information to come forward and assist in bringing closure to the affected families and the broader community.
According to the annual 2024 police crime report, about 25 lives are lost everyday in Uganda to murder and road crashes.
