A fatal hit-and-run accident claimed the lives of four people, including three males and a female, on Thursday morning along the Bushenyi-Mbarara road.
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 2:00 AM near Peak Hotel along the busy Bushenyi-Mbarara highway.
According to a statement released by the Greater Bushenyi Police, the victims, three males and one female, were travelling on a motorcycle when they were struck by an unidentified motor vehicle.
SP Tayebwa Apollo, the Police Public Relations Officer for Greater Bushenyi, confirmed that traffic officers swiftly responded to the scene.
"We managed the scene as per standard procedures, and the four bodies were conveyed to the KIU Teaching Hospital Ishaka mortuary, and postmortem examinations were conducted to officially establish the cause of death," SP Tayebwa stated.
Preliminary investigations point to reckless driving by the unidentified motorist as the primary cause of the tragedy.
The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, prompting the police in Bushenyi to launch a massive manhunt to apprehend him and face justice.
"Our efforts to trace the driver are ongoing. We urge any member of the public with information regarding the whereabouts of this driver to covertly inform the Uganda Police Force in Bushenyi so that the families of the deceased can get justice," SP Tayebwa said.
SP Tayebwa added, "In light of this devastating incident, we have issued a stern warning to all motorists, and as police, we strongly appeal to road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations to prevent such avoidable loss of life."
The identity of the deceased remains unknown as police work to contact their next of kin.
