The Republic of Ecuador has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, as the only serious, credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.

The position was expressed in a Joint Communiqué signed on Friday in Rabat following talks between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom.

The communiqué noted that Ecuador welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), which reaffirmed that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty represents the most feasible solution to end the dispute.

Both countries also reiterated their support for the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara and for ongoing efforts to advance the political process towards a definitive resolution of the issue.

According to the communiqué, Ecuador has decided to extend its consular reach to the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with international law.

Ecuador further expressed its willingness to promote economic and trade cooperation opportunities in the Moroccan Sahara, with a view to opening prospects towards the African continent and strengthening investment, trade and productive development.

Sommerfeld announced that Ecuador’s Ambassador to Rabat is expected to visit the Sahara region soon to prepare and support a number of economic initiatives.
