Young African Women called to build influence through networks, innovation in Accra

Young African women have been urged to position themselves for leadership by embracing innovation, collaboration and purposeful networking as Africa faces rapidly evolving social and economic challenges.

This message emerged at the 2026 Annual National Summit organised by the Ghana Chapter of the Young African Women Congress Network in Accra, under the theme “The Next Generation of African Women: Driving Innovation and Redefining Leadership.”

Speakers at the event emphasised that leadership in today’s world is shifting away from traditional authority structures toward influence, teamwork and problem-solving capacity.

Former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, Kosi Antwiwaa Yankey-Ayeh, also urged young women to focus on continuous skills development and to create platforms that position them for emerging opportunities, stressing that innovation remains key in a competitive global environment.

Dr Caryn Agyeman Prempeh, Municipal Director of Health Services for La Dade-Kotopon, encouraged women to foster solidarity by supporting and mentoring one another instead of competing. She noted that empowering other women contributes to stronger leadership outcomes and broader societal progress.

Adding to the discussion, Maataa Opare, Managing Partner of Hawkhurst & Dua Associates, highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing Africa’s development challenges.

She pointed out that issues such as education, healthcare delivery, climate change and technology gaps require collaboration across disciplines and sectors rather than isolated efforts.

The First Deputy Managing Director of Consolidated Bank Ghana, Sheila Azuntaba, encouraged participants to intentionally build professional networks and increase their visibility through digital platforms and industry engagements.

She noted that young women must actively create opportunities rather than wait for them, while connecting with mentors and influential professionals who can support their growth.

The summit featured discussions on leadership development, mentorship, networking and innovation, with participants describing it as an inspiring platform aimed at preparing the next generation of African women leaders.
