The Africa Governance Centre (AGC) is pleased to announce its participation in the XLIII José “Lito” Jara Plenary Meeting of the Permanent Conference of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPPAL), held in Mexico City, Mexico.
The Centre was represented by its Executive Chair, Benedicta Lasi, and Executive Director, Prof Nelson Oppong, following a formal invitation extended by COPPPAL in recognition of the longstanding strategic partnership between the two institutions and their shared commitment to advancing democratic governance and political cooperation.
AGC's participation at the high-level Plenary Meeting marks another important milestone in the growing relationship between the Africa Governance Centre and COPPPAL. It builds upon the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutions during the 2025 African Political Parties Summit (APPS), which established a framework for sustained collaboration on democratic governance, political party development, leadership, institutional strengthening, and knowledge exchange between Africa and Latin America.
The Plenary Meeting convened political leaders, party executives, policymakers, diplomats, and international partners from across Latin America and the Caribbean to deliberate on pressing regional and global issues shaping the future of democracy, governance, political cooperation, peace, and sustainable development.
Discussions focused on strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing political dialogue, promoting inclusive governance, and reinforcing international solidarity among political actors committed to democratic values.
The Africa Governance Centre was honoured to contribute to these important conversations and reaffirm its commitment to fostering stronger interregional partnerships that encourage the exchange of experiences, best practices, and innovative approaches to democratic governance.
The Centre believes that collaboration between Africa and Latin America presents significant opportunities to address shared governance challenges while advancing democratic resilience, citizen participation, and accountable political leadership.
During the Plenary Meeting, Senator Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas was re-elected President of COPPPAL.
The Africa Governance Centre extends its warm congratulations to President Moreno Cárdenas on his election and expresses confidence that his leadership will further strengthen cooperation among political parties across Latin America and deepen COPPPAL's engagement with strategic partners on the African continent.
AGC also conveys its appreciation to the leadership and Secretariat of COPPPAL for the invitation and warm hospitality extended to its delegation throughout the meeting.
The Centre values the mutual trust that continues to define this partnership and remains committed to translating shared aspirations into practical initiatives that promote democratic consolidation, peace, and sustainable development across both regions.
As democratic governance continues to evolve amid emerging global challenges, the Africa Governance Centre remains steadfast in its mission to work alongside governments, political parties, regional organizations, development partners, and civil society to advance inclusive political participation, strengthen democratic institutions, and promote accountable leadership.
