The West Africa People’s Organisation (WAPO) has elected Ghanaian organiser Nana Yaw Appiah Kubi as its Secretary General at its 2nd Quadrennial Congress held in Aburi, Ghana.

The congress, held from October 30 to November 1, 2026, at the Amilcar Cabral School in Agyanoa, brought together about 100 representatives from 30 organisations across 11 West African countries.

The participating organisations included labour unions, political movements, social movements and political parties. The congress was held under the theme: “One People, One Struggle: Against Imperialism for Popular Power in West Africa.”

Appiah Kubi's election was met with a standing ovation and loud applause from delegates, signalling their confidence in his leadership and organisational abilities.

Before his election, he served as Director of Operations at the WAPO Secretariat, where he oversaw the organisation's activities and programmes. At the congress, he presented a report on the Secretariat's work over the past four years, highlighting the impact of cadre training and political education.

Other leaders elected include Philippe Toyo Noudjenoume of Benin as President, Khady Ndiaye of Senegal as First Vice President, and Yahaya Mohammed as Second Vice President.

Oye Beavogui of Guinea-Conakry was elected Treasurer, while Gueye Souleymane of Senegal and Aliyu Mohammed of Nigeria were elected as executive members.

The congress also deliberated on organisational, constitutional and international relations matters through three commissions, whose resolutions were presented to the plenary for consideration and approval.

In his welcome address, Convenor of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, Comrade Kyeretwie Opoku, called for unity among working people across West Africa and Africa in the fight against imperialism.

President Philippe Toyo Noudjenoume also urged delegates to draw inspiration from African leaders such as Kwame Nkrumah, Ahmed Sékou Touré, Thomas Sankara and Amílcar Cabral, and intensify efforts to build a strong revolutionary movement capable of confronting imperialism.

Appiah Kubi's election is expected to provide continuity in the organisation's administration as WAPO seeks to strengthen its mobilisation, political education and campaign for popular power across West Africa.
