Tens of thousands of South African commuters have been left stranded following a strike by minibus drivers in Gauteng province, the country's commercial hub.

Minibus taxis blocked major roads in the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, where there is a heavy police presence.

The drivers are demanding more financial support from the government, saying Coronavirus restrictions have reduced their income.

Taxis can only operate at 70% capacity to ensure social distancing.

The government announced a one off payment of nearly $300 (£240) per registered driver, but taxi operators rejected the offer.
