Anyako Senior High School wins Super-Zonal Sports Festival

Hohoe, June 27, GNA - The 35th annual Volta Region Schools and Colleges Super-Zonal Sports Festival ended in Hohoe on Thursday with Anyako Senior High School (SHS) emerging as the overall winner. The School won seven gold, two silver and a bronze medal to place first in the competition involving 29 schools. Kpando Technical SHS came second with six gold medals, four silver and two bronze followed by Anlo SHS in third place with six gold and two silver.

They were followed by Keta Business SHS in the fourth place with four gold, two silver and three bronze with Kadjebi Asato SHS grabbing the fifth position with three gold.


Sogakope, Anloga Technical, Mafi-Kumasi, Akatsi and Three-Town SHS took the sixth to 10th positions.


The Northern Zone was adjudged the best behaved Zone with 75 percent beating the Central and Southern Zones to the second and third places with 70.5 percent and 69 percent respectively.


Lower-North, Mid-South and Upper-North Zones placed fourth, fifth and sixth gaining 65 percent, 61.5 percent and 57.5 percent. In the boys final soccer match, Sogakope SHS beat Awudome SHS by a lone goal to grab the gold with Three-Town SHS spanking Kpando SHS 3-0 to snatch the gold in the girl's division.


In the boy's 200-metre final race, John Fiagbe of Anlo SHS clocked 20.30 seconds to pick the gold with Stephen Reindolph of Mawuli SHS placing second with 20.53 sec and Joy Bissi of Anfoega SHS picking the bronze in a time of 20.56 sec.

In the girl's 100-metre race, Forgive Kuadzi came first with Elorm Titiaku and Phedelia Torsutsey following in that order. They were timed, 13.76 sec, 13.77 sec and 14.10 sec.


Reverend Samuel A. Amankwa, Volta Regional Director of Education in his closing remarks expressed gratitude to government for the giant strides it has made in the provision of academic facilities and structures and called for equal attention to be accorded sports infrastructure in educational institutions.


He commended Unilever-Ghana, Gold Fields Ghana Limited, Ghana Breweries Limited and many others for their continued support towards the growth and development of sports and games in the country. Mr Musah Yamba Issahaku, Volta Regional Chairman of Schools and Colleges Sports Federation, said a novelty of placing first schools in the inter-zonal events representing their Zones in the Super-Zonals has the potential off boosting the zeal and competitiveness of sports at the Second Cycle level.


He said the regional representation would therefore be on merit and thanked all stakeholders for running an incident-free festival. Mr Paul K. Dra, Managing Director of Paul's Fashion Shop, dealers in sporting apparel donated a set of jerseys worth 250 Ghana Cedis to Sogakope SHS, for emerging as the soccer champions.
