Ashanti Inter-Schools and Colleges Athletic competition ends

Kumasi, March 19, GNA - A total of eleven new records were set in grand style in this year's Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges Athletic competition held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. In the Boy's Division which was won by Opoku Ware Senior High School with 97 points, six new records were set in the 5000, 1500, and 400 metres as well as in the Discus, Javelin and 4=D7400 relay event. Kumasi Girls SHS won the Girl's Division with 116 points in which five new records were set in the 1500 and 3000 metres, 100 metre hurdles, Discus and the 4=D7100 relay event.
William Akaku of Prempeh College set a new record in the 5000 metres in a new time of 15.33.6 seconds to erase the old record which stood at a time of 15.37.2 seconds while Samuel Boahene of Opoku Ware SHS also set a new record in the 1500 metres with a time of 4.04.6 seconds to shatter the old record of 4.04.8 seconds.
In the Discus event, Isaac Gyimah of Opoku Ware SHS clocked a new record throw of 41.61 metres to improve upon the old record of 41.42 metres, whilst Mohammed Abubakar of Kumasi T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS set a new record in the 400 metres with a time of 48.06 seconds to improve upon the old record of 48.07 seconds.
In the Javelin event, Emmanuel Gyefah of the Ghana National Academy recorded a new record throw of 54.65 metres to shatter the old record of 53.68 metres whilst Kumasi T. I. Ahmadiyya set a new record in the 4=D7400 relay event with a time of 3.22.3 seconds to improve upon the old record which stood at 3.22.6 seconds.
Alice Boadu of Tepa SHS put up a brilliant performance to set a new record of 4.48.4 seconds in the 1500 metres to erase the old record of 4.53.3 seconds, with Agnes Bayor of Dompoase SHS setting a new record in the 3000 metres in a new time of 10.33.9 seconds to shatter the old record of 10.40.8 seconds.
In the 100 metre hurdle race, Dorcas Gyimah of Konongo Odumase SHS set a new record of 15.6 seconds to beat the old record of 15.7 seconds whilst Vida Wumpua of St. Louis SHS set a new record in the Discus event with a throw of 33.01 metres to improve upon the old record of 32.89 metres. In the 4=D7100 relay event, Kumasi Girls SHS set a new record with a time of 49.2 seconds to improve upon the old record of 50.01 seconds. Opoku Ware SHS which placed first in the Boy's Division were presented with a trophy and other souvenirs donated by the Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges Sports Federation. Ghana National Academy and Konongo Odumase SHS placed second and third, respectively, with 75 and 71 points. In the Girl's Division, the leaders, Kumasi Girls SHS were also presented with a trophy and other consolation prizes, whilst Konongo Odumase SHS and St. Monica's placed second and third, respectively, with 81 and 64 points. 19 March 08
