Medals and cash prizes will be presented to winners of the annual G.S Laryea Memorial Cup at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The winners excelled in both men and women athletic championships (100m) organised recently in honour of the late G.S Laryea, who is known as the ‘Doyen of Ghana Athletics.’
According to a family spokesman, the G.S Laryea Award – which is making its debut, was not only instituted to honour the sprint legend, “but also to make sure athletics does not die a slow painful death in the country.”
“We have relegated athletics to the background and given football all the attention. This, we think is not the way to go,” he said.
G.S Laryea, who died on June 23, 2009, participated in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games and the Canada ’54 Commonwealth Games.
Ahead of the Helsinki Olympics, he won three gold medals in a championship in Denmark, having already swept several medals in Britain and Germany particularly.
