The first national athletics open championship organised by the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) will kick-start on Sunday, February 20 at the El-Wak sports stadium.
Madam Phillipina Frimpong, General secretary of the GAA has told sportscrusader.com about the upcoming first open championship and that associations readiness to groom talents in readiness for the upcoming African championship and the Olympic games in Rio.
She said, “the open championship which was initially scheduled for Kumasi on the Saturday 13th February, 2016 has been moved to Accra because it’s coincided with the super zonals competition scheduled for Kumasi. This as a result made the time frame for the athletes not favorable.”
Madam Philipina also emphasized on the difficulty in raising funds for the upcoming event, but was hopeful the team put in place which includes Professor Duodo and other executives would be able to solicit for sponsorship before the time is due.
The first open championship which is the first of five schedule for this year is to enable athlete make up the required mark to participate in the African Championship in July and the Rio Olympics in August respectively.
