GHANASS lead at Koforidua SHS Zonal athletics competition

Mercy N-Teyigmah of Ghana National Senior High School (GHANASS} won the girls long jump finals with a jump of 4.65 meters at the opening day of the 29th Annual Koforidua Second Cycle Schools Zonal Athletics Competition.

The zonal competition began on Thursday at the Koforidua Sports Stadium.

Juliet Quartey of Oyoko Methodist Senior High School ( OMESS) came second with a jump of 4.54 meters whiles the third position went to Amadi Miriam of New Juaben Secondary Commercial Senior High School (NJUASCO) with a jump of 4.40 meters.

Nine schools from New Juaben Municipality, namely Ghana National Senior High School (GHANASS), Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH), New Juaben Senior High Commercial School (NJUASCO), Pope John Senior High School (POJOSS), Oti Boateng Senior High (OBOSS), Oyoko Methodist Senior High School (OMESS), Koforidua Technical Institute (KOTECH), SDA Senior High School (SADASS) and Pentecost Senior High School (PENSEC) are taking part in the competition.

The schools would be competing in track and field events like Javelin, high jump, shot put, discus, 400m, 100m, 200m, 4x100m and 800m.

Spencer Okane of POJOSS won the boy’s shot putt with a throw of 12.40 meters, Yegbe Roland from OMESS came second with a throw of 12.20 meters while the third position went to Sackey Emmanuel of OMESS with 11.85 meters.

Opening the competition, Dr Owusu Acheampong, the New Juaben Municipal Chief Executive said, sports helps promote the economic development of countries and urged the athletics to show more seriousness in sporting activities.

He advised the youth to be disciplined and desist from social vices such as alcoholism, drugs and pre-marital sex, which can destroy their lives.

Madam Esther Otu, Deputy Municipal Education Director said, the zonal competition is aimed at selecting talents to represent the Koforidua zone at the Regional Sports festival.

She urged the athletics to do their best, be disciplined and show good sportsmanship to be selected to represent the Region.

The two-day athletics competition ended on Friday.
