Accra, Feb 9, GNA - The Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) in conjunction with the National Sports Council has put in place measures to organise national Athletics Championship in Lome, Togo. The two-day event, which has been approved by the Ministry of Education and Sports, would commence on Tuesday, February 21 at the new Lome Sports Stadium.
A release issued by E.K Oteng-Aboagye, Secretary General of the GAA copied to the GNA Sports said the sector Ministry has successfully sought permission from their counterparts in Togo to enable Ghana host the annual event away from home.
He said the 140-contingent made up of 120 athletes and 20 officials would depart Accra to Togo on Monday February 20 for the competition. The GAA moved the annual event to Togo due to the current refurbishments taking place at both the Accra and Kumasi Sports Stadiums.
The Association urged all the participants or teams from the ten administrative regions to report at the Ohene Djan Sports stadium to be transported to Aflao.
The release reminded that all submission of entries would close on Friday, February 10.
Meanwhile, the GAA has announced that it would hold an emergency meeting at the Conference Room of the Ghana Olympic Committee on Wednesday, February 15.
The meeting would discuss preparations towards the National Championships in Lome, the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia and the procedure for selection of local athletes for the Africa Championship in Mauritius in August as well as other related issues concerning the sport.
