National Disabled athletics championship gets underway in Kumasi

Kumasi, Aug. 24, GNA - The 2010 National Disabled Athletics championship opened at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Tuesday with Ashanti Region taking early lead in most of the first day events.

The two-day competition is being organized under the auspices of the Association for Sports for the Disabled in collaboration with the National Sports Council.


It is designed to select athletes for this year's Commonwealth Games slated for India in October.


In the women's 400 metre final race, Ajara Mohammed of the Ashanti Region placed first with a time of 1.00.66 seconds followed by Anita Fordwour and Bernice Frimpong, both from the same Region taking the second and third positions with 1.06.42 seconds and 1.09 seconds, respectively.


In the women's 1,500 metre race, Ajara once again took the first position with a time of 4.24 seconds with Anita placing second with a time of 4.38 seconds and Bernice Frimpong taking the third position with a time of 4.42 seconds.

In the men's 1,500 metre race, Raphael Botchwey of Brong-Ahafo Region emerged the winner with a time of 3.31 seconds while Patrick Obeng and Emmanuel Boateng, both representing the Ashanti Region placed second and third in a time 3.56 seconds and 4.01 seconds, respectively.


In the female category of the shot-put event, Angelina Obeng of Ashanti Region placed first with a throw of 4.04 meters followed by Olivia Boahemaa and Georgina Nkrumah both from the Ashanti Region placing second and third with a throw of 3.10 metres and 2.61 metres, respectively.


The men's shot-put event saw John Bukari of the Eastern Region placing first with a throw of 5.39 metres followed by Sheriff Hamidu of Greater Accra Region at the second position with a throw of 5.29 metres while Paul Nsiah of Western Region placed third with a throw of 5.25 metres.
