William Amponsah has won the first ever biggest event under 1hr 12 mins in the boys event in the Asante Akyem Marathon which was organised by The former member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Hon. Kwadwo Baah Agyemang.

The Swedru senior product caused a major upset at the GAA Circuit in Accra last month, beating some top dogs to clinch 2nd. He won the Kwahu Marathon on Friday.

About five thousand participants including professional and amateur athletes participated in the much publicised 20 kilometer marathon race at the Collins Park at Agogo.

Precious Nyaba from Kumasi Buokrom JHS who made 1hr 31mins 15esc was crowed first with the ladies event.

Purpose:

In an exclusive interview with the Space FM-Tarkwa ahead of the marathon, the youthful Kwadwo Baah Agyemang said the purpose of the race was to unearth more talents for the country in the area of athletics.

According to him, the country abounds in much talent in every sphere of sports including the lesser known sports. This, he noted gives him encouragement to help unearth talents in the area of marathon which has not been given much attention.

The former MP indicated his desire to also use the event to encourage the youth to take delight in exercising their bodies since healthy minds lived in healthy bodies.

Prizes:

Revealing the mouthwatering prizes to the paper, Hon Baah Agyemang said the first prize winner will have a Ghana-London ticket to represent the country in the upcoming London marathon.

The second placed person and others are also to receive mouthwatering packages.

The first to the tenth placed participants, the paper learnt would also have the opportunity to participate in the Milo marathon which will be organised very soon in the country.

As at the time of filing this report ambulances and security arrangements had been put in place to ensure all goes well at the event.

Volunteers had also been readied to be at vantage points to administer support in the form of the provision of water and glucose drinks to participants across the route of Akutuase up to the Collins Park which will serve as the end point.

The Minister of Youth and Sports and other high profile sports personalities graced the ceremony and offered their support and encouragement to the event.
