Ghana’s Wheelchair Basketball Federation is at risk of getting hit with a $10,000 penalty and ban from participating in International Wheelchair Basketball Federation organized competitions should it fail to present a team for next month’s African qualifiers.

Ghana’s National Male Wheelchair Basketball Team, the Black Chariots- are expected in South Africa to compete in the continental qualifiers for next year’s World Cup to be held in Germany. The African competition takes place between November 18 and November 28 where countries like Angola, Nigeria and Zimbabwe will compete with Ghana for Africa’s sole spot at the world event.

The West African country’s participation in the championship has been been called into question following news of Ghana’s Sports Ministry’s appeal for the team to withdraw from the Championship.

Financial challenges have been cited as the reasons behind the request since the Government arm is required to bear the brunt of the $10,700 estimated budget for the trip to South Africa.

The budget will cater to accommodation, feeding and internal transportation needs of the entourage during the competition.

It must be noted talks are ongoing between the Ministry’s representatives and reps from the local and international federation.
