Tamale, June 10, GNA - Tamale Girls International School Complex (TAGIS) on Wednesday won the Girls' sector of this year's Northern Regional Basketball Competition played at the Ghana Secondary School (GHANASCO) of Tamale when they beat the host institution, 24-4 and also spanked Tamale Girls Secondary School 28-0 to retain the trophy they won last year.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) instituted the competition dubbed: "JICA Regional Basketball Competition" three years ago aimed at unearthing hidden basketball talents in the Region. Ms Atebke Elizabeth of the Tamale Girls International School was adjudged the best female basketball player of the competition and was awarded a leather basketball and a certificate. Tamale Secondary School (TAMASCO) came first in the Boys' finals to grab the trophy when they beat GHANASCO at the finals whilst St. Charles Secondary School also beat the Northern School of Business to place third.

Mr Albert Atutiga, Chairman of the occasion called for more commitment in the organization of the basketball sport to unearth hidden talents to represent the Region and the nation in international competitions. He said the Region over the years had topped the nation in basketball competitions under the supervision of Dr Baba Sampana, a basketball enthusiast based in Tamale but unfortunately it has lost the glory due to lack of interest and the needed support.

Mr Atutiga who is also the Proprietor of the Tamale Girls International School Complex called on sports organizers to pay more attention to the development of the game of basketball and other sporting activities to enhance sports development in the country instead of concentrating only on soccer.
