Navy Warriors streaked to its sixth win of the 2017 Accra Basketball League (ABL) Men’s Division II by recording an 81-59 victory over DCD Aspirants in a tie played earlier tonight at the Lebanon House Court in Tudu.
A big first half display was the key to Warriors sixth win on the bounce as the deficit proved too big for Aspirants to overcome. After winning its maiden game of the season in the last round, DCD’s means the side missed out on the chance to register a winning run in the competition.
Warriors Michael Sakor drained a trio of three point shots with Obed Vorjee adding another as Navy edged out DCD in a first quarter dotted with three point shots. Aspirants Joe Nettey joined in the fun by converting one from deep but it was not all sniping from deep that made the difference in the quarter as Navy Forward Mando Federic and DCD’s Gabby Ashaley traded buckets with shots coming in close proximity to the rim. Navy won the quarter 25-15.
Navy made a quick start by scoring on fastbreak layups and Vorjee topped it up with a deep trey. However, Aspirants got it going midway through quarter with Quincy Mensah combining with Ashaley for Nettey to drain open corner three point shot.
Quincy Mensah completed a three point play and scored uncontested layup to finish strong for his side despite trailing 29-42 at half time.
In the second half, Sakor scored and delivered pass to Moses Abu to extend lead to 52-32 with 5:44 remaining. After struggling to generate offense, Aspirants ended quarter again on a high note by scoring ten straight points as the team exploited Warriors turnover woes; Warriors ended quarter 54-47.
Navy got on the scoring board from charity stripe but DCD responded with two three point shots to trail 53-58 with seven mins left in the final quarter. Navy then went on a ten point run with Sarkor and Vorjee scoring to lead 70-59 and halt Aspirants momentum with two mins left before rounding up the win.
