Coronavirus threat forces suspension of multiple basketball leagues in Ghana

The Coronavirus spread is on the rise in Ghana after 16 confirmed cases have been reported a week after the first cases was reported.

As a measure to limit the spread of the virus, the West African nation’s President Nana Akufo-Addo issued a month-long ban on all social gatherings.

Sporting activities are included and that has affected multiple events in sports in multiple disciplines including basketball which is very popular among Ghana’s youth.

The sport has a passionate fan base and the directive has affected a host of competitions in the country with the Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges (UPAC) Championship headlining the list.

Ghana’s biggest tertiary basketball competition had concluded competitions in Zone One and Zone Two before the tournament was suspended.

The 2020 Accra Basketball League (ABL) season concluded games in Week One at the Lebanon House Court in Tudu but has been suspended until further notice.

The GSP League has followed suit after Week 9 games. Games in the Kumasi League and Tema Community League are yet to commence.
