Accra,May 11, GNA - Mr Clifford Johnson Aboagye, chairman of the Ghana Weightlifting and Body Building Association (GW/BBA) has assured Ghanaians of 26 medals at the impending All Africa Games slated for Algiers, Algeria from July 11 to 23.
He said his team would bring home 10 gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals to complete the list.
Speaking to the GNA Sports he said, the Ninth All Africa Games would be a perfect opportnity for his team to assume dominance in weightlifting on the continent, as Ghana was yet to win a gold medal despite its good performance in the sport in recent times. "We've never won gold medal in any All African Games and the Olympics before but we're going to make a major impact at the Games by winning a lot of gold medals."
He said their success at the All Africa Games would create the path for more laurels at the 2008 Beijing Olympics Games." "Even though we're camping our team for only six months in Ghana, whilst countries like Egypt, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and our own neigbours Burkina Faso are camping in China, Bulgaria and Germany, I'm confident that my team will be the best in Algeria. "Our rivals are training with the best facilities but we are not frightened at all.We know what our lifters can do best," he assured Ghanaians.
He commended Mr.Richard Anane, Mr.Prince Amoabeng of Unique Trust and GLICO respectively for their support to the team and appealed to other individuals and corporate entities, with passion for the sport, to support them.
"Such motivation is transforming the lives of people who were destined to die through poverty and crime into World Champions and sports role models," he stated Each weightlifter is capable of winning medals in each weight category. Each weight category is made up of three events - Snatch and Clean and Jerk and a combination of the two. This means a cotingent of five lifters for five different weight categories could win 15 medals in a competition. 11 May 07
