The annual Accra Rugby 7s tournament organized by the Ghana Rugby Association (GRA) returns with the 3rd edition on December 15 when for the first time a team from outside this country will also compete for honours in a tournament expected to also see an unprecedented total of 21 teams taking part.
Also joining on board for the first time are Beaufort Properties Limited who are sponsoring the event billed to see a mammoth increase from the eight men’s clubs that participated on its debut two years ago to 14 local men’s clubs, 4 women’s clubs, two juvenile clubs and one men’s club from West Africa neighbours, Nigeria. The venue remains the Ajax Park located on the University of Ghana campus for a competition of speed, dives and amazing tackles in the presence of dignitaries expected to grace the occasion including the entire board of the Ghana Rugby Association led by the President, Gifty Annan-Myers, Director of Sports of the University of Ghana, Regional Sports Director, Acting Director General of the National Sports Authority and officials of the sponsors, Beaufort Properties Ghana Limited.

It added:”We urge all interested individuals and companies to come forward and support in whatever way they can. They can sponsor a national team, sponsor a tournament, sponsor an IRB Coaches Course, adopt a team, etc.” In the event on 15 December, defending champions, Cosmos Buffalos will face a battle to keep their trophy from maiden winners, University of Ghana and Dansoman Hurricanes, Accra Warriors, Oguaman Ocean Warriors (Cape Coast), Accra Sharks, Abura Bombers, Idas Sports, Ketu Lions, Spartans, Skyhawks, Tema Anchors, Ashanti Black Bulls as well as Police Rugby Club (Nigeria).
The women’s competition is a straight fight between University of Ghana Ladies and national champions, Cosmos Ladies even though Warrior Ladies and Floreat Ladies of Cape Coast will have something to say about that. Abura Bombers and Legon Titans will square up for the sole honour of Juvenile champions.
