The Association of Ghanaian Lawyers of America (AGLA) will have its 1st annual dinner-dance on Saturday August 3, 2013 at the Gran Centurions in Clark, New Jersey. The event will feature members of the Ghana Bar Association who will be in the US at that time as well as a newly-formed AGA chapter in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Ghana’s permanent representative to the UN will be the guest of honor.

The event will attract many attorneys and practitioners in the tri-state area and beyond, many of whom practice in State and Federal governments, corporations, or work as law professors and in private law firms. Also expected to attend are members of the Ghanaian community and other professionals in the tri-State area. “This maiden dinner-dance should see our hardworking members and their friends and families really taking time off to have a little fun while networking with their peers” opined AGLA president, Kwaku Boafoh Agyeman. “Since formally incorporating in 2008 and growing our organization, we have been considering setting aside one day a year just to have a good time. I am glad we were able to do that this year,” he added. Currently in its 5th year, AGLA has successfully organized free legal clinics in New York and New Jersey, supported the Ghana Legal Aid Scheme in collaboration with Fordham Law School and contributed to Ghana’s Constitutional Review, among other things.

AGLA has also collaborated with New York’s joint minority bar associations to offer programs including a recent uncontested divorce initiative under the New York Courts’ Access to Justice Program, the Network of Bar Leaders diversity initiatives and the joint bar annual events. The association has also hosted and dialogued on legal developments with members of Ghana’s legal community including members of the Ghana Bar Association, the former attorney general and the immediate past director of Ghana Law School.
