Akropong (B/A) Sept. 1 GNA - Eight non-residents of Akropong in the Nkoranza district of Brong-Ahafo region currently based in Italy have donated a cash amount of 9.2 million cedis to support the community's development programmes.
Mr. George Franklin Effah, Assemblyman for the area told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Akropong that the people had used the money to purchase 12 street bulbs and some cables so as to provide security lights at all vantage places in the community. He said part of the money was also used in buying amplifiers and some speakers to be used as the town 'crier' to support the 'gong-gong' beating to inform the people of important events as well as summon them for public meetings.
The assemblyman commended the donors for their concern and commitment towards the development of the area and said such efforts of some individuals revealed people's love for their community. He stressed the need for other youth of the area to copy from the shinning examples of the donors.
In a related development, an elder of Akropong, Nana Kwabre Dabre, a landowner in the area has released 30 hectares of land in support of an agricultural project in the area in order that the youth of the place would be considered for employment to enhance their lot. Under the project known as the Community Based Rural Development Project, the youth would be organised to plant economic trees and the district assembly which would supervise the project would ensure that the youth who would be engaged to work on the project would be given the necessary financial assistance towards their upkeep.
Mr. Effah, the assemblyman also said timber species such as mahogany, Odum and teak would be planted alongside river bodies in the area to boost the national afforestation programme and also save the rivers from drying up in the harmattan seasons. The district assembly had arranged to develop the waterfalls at the river Nkonsu at Akropong as well as another one at the Akruma River also located at Dandwa.
Meanwhile the Queen mother of Dandwa, Nana Yaa Fosuaa and the elders of the area has demarcated about four hectares plot of land towards the development of the Akruma waterfalls to attract tourist to the community to promote the area's development.
